Bus from Hue

Recently we have been having problems with various afternoon bus services with companies including Camel Travel & Queen Cafe coming from Hue arriving in Phong Nha town after our Greenfield Ecostay closes. The buses usually arrive between midnight to 02:00 and we have even had reports of them dropping people off in Dong Hoi which is 45 KM away. We have also had reports from travelers of the buses not actually leaving Hue until they have enough passengers on the bus which impacts their arrival time in Phong Nha town. For this reason we can only suggest coming on either the train from Hue to Dong Hoi, and then taking a transfer/taxi or local bus to reach Phong Nha, or by taking one of the buses listed below. We have found these to be the most reliable and friendly bus experiences between Hue and us, and no, we don’t make commission by suggesting them!

Please note that these same options can be used to go TO Hue as well.

Option 1) The DMZ bus. Leaves the DMZ Bar at 14:00, arrives in Phong Nha town at 18:00. You can buy tickets from the DMZ Bar on the corner of Le Loi Street & Pham Ngu Lao Street and from DMZ Hostel at 01 Pham Ngu Lao Street. Please note that this does NOT stop anywhere in the DMZ, it is a direct bus. It will drop you off at Greenfield Ecostay, so it’s nice and easy! You also get to arrive in Phong Nha in time for happy hour at Greenfield Cafe Alehouse and to book all of our available tours for the following day. But, if you want to join with family dinner, please let us before you get on.

Option 2) Hung Thanh Travel bus departs from Hung Thanh bus office at 49 Chu Van An at 17:00 and arrives in Phong Nha town. You can buy tickets from there and they generally will pick you up from your accommodation in Hue in a mini van shuttle to transfer you and your bags to the main bus. This is the best evening bus to take, but please note that you miss local happy hours and family dinner, and the bus can sometimes get in late. Great if you want to spend most of the day in Hue before heading to Phong Nha.

Option 3) The Tan Nhat Travel/Duy Tan Travel bus departs from Central Hue at 07:00 and will drop you off in Phong Nha town at around 12:00. This is a bus that does a day tour to Phong Nha but also takes passengers. (You will stop at a ruined church along the way. If you walk behind the big building with the statue of the virgin Mary, and go through the gate, there are noodle shops if you didn’t have breakfast, but be quick as you only stop for 20 minutes!). This is a great bus if you want to arrive in time to see Phong Nha Cave in the afternoon, or to make use of our free bicycles and explore the area for a few hours.

Option 4) The local bus The “Phuc Vu” (don’t ask us to pronounce that) bus departs Hue at 11:30AM from Hue’s Northern Bus Station. You pay the driver 90,000-150,000VND depending what mood he is in, and tell him “Phong Nha”. This is a local bus and we have no control over it. It is cheap and fast (when it goes on time and doesn’t break down). It takes about 5 hours. Registration is 73B-00366. This bus returns Phong Nha to Hue at 05:00 each day.

Sleeper Bus from Hanoi

The cheapest and most convenient way of getting from Hanoi to Phong Nha town is by sleeper bus. We suggest you take the Hung Thanh bus from Hung Thanh bus office at 162B Tran Quang Khai 18:00, this drops you off in Phong Nha town at around 04:00 in the morning. To book this service you can go to Hung Thanh’s office at 162B Tran Quang Khai or 287 Tran Khat Chan street. You can purchase an open bus ticket from Hung Thanh which can then take you on wards to Hue, Hoi An, and beyond. Sleeper Bus from Ninh Binh/Tam Coc

The cheapest and most convenient way of getting from Ninh Binh or Tam Coc to Phong Nha town is by sleeper bus. We suggest you take the Hung Thanh bus which can be booked at Kinh Do Hotel in the Ninh Binh city center or The Long Hotel in Tam Coc, this drops you off in Phong Nha town at around 04:00 in the morning. You can purchase an open bus ticket from Hung Thanh in Hanoi at 162B Tran Quang Khai prior to departing Hanoi (if you haven’t already) which can then take you onward to Hue, Hoi An, and beyond. Motorbikes

Phong Nha town (also known as Son Trach) is situated along the Ho Chi Minh Highway East (Ho Chi Minh Dong). The town is about 45km north west of Dong Hoi. You will either be arriving on the Ho Chi Minh East, or coming into the area along the Ho Chi Minh West (Tay). If arriving from Hanoi or from Dong Hoi, you will be arriving in on the Ho Chi Minh East, and you should look out for the large “PHONG NHA-KE BANG” sign on the side of the mountain. It is similar in looks to the famous ‘HOLLYWOOD” sign, and is lit up at night. When you see this sign, turn off the highway towards the sign, and follow the road under the Sign & go along the Son river about 04 km, Greenfield Ecostay is located among the field with wooden house & little bungalow. And we also have the sign, written “Greenfield Ecostay”.

If arriving from Khe Sanh along the very scenic Ho Chi Minh West road, you will eventually come to a large bridge, and just after the bridge is a crossroads. At the crossroads, turn right, and follow that road for around 15km. You will pass through the entrance gate of the National Park, and if you keep going you will eventually get to a T-junction, with a big stone totem pole in front of you. Turn right there, and drive through the town for about 4km, whereupon you will eventually see Phong Nha Ke Bang tourist center & go further 05 km to Greenfield Ecostay. Good luck! Please remember that it takes most of a day to ride from Khe Sanh, 8-9 hours, so start early and take some spare fuel with you.
